Cosmetic tattooing has rapidly become one of the most sought-after beauty treatments in Nashville, offering long-lasting solutions for eyebrows, lips, eyeliner, and even freckles. I offer cosmetic tattooing services specifically for eyebrows as well as freckles. Whether you're looking to save time on your daily makeup routine or enhance your natural beauty, cosmetic tattooing might be the perfect option for you. Before you book your first appointment, it’s essential to know what cosmetic tattooing involves, what to expect, and how to choose the right professional to provide this service.
Here’s everything you need to know before booking your cosmetic tattoo appointment.
What Is Cosmetic Tattooing?
Cosmetic tattooing, also known as permanent makeup, is a technique that uses specialized pigments to enhance features like eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner. Unlike traditional tattoos, cosmetic tattoos are applied more superficially and tend to fade over time, usually lasting between 1-3 years. There are different techniques available:
Microblading: A semi-permanent technique used to enhance the brows by creating hair-like strokes for a natural, fuller appearance. The pigment can be applied via tapping, shading or making hair like strokes. This is done by hand and a machine is not used.
Powder Brows or Micro Shading: Pigment is diluted to reduce the opacity and tapped into the skin in a soft, all over technique that helps to fill in sparse areas and create a background shade. I prefer using a combination of both of these techniques to create the most natural, 3D effect possible.
Why Cosmetic Tattooing is Popular in Nashville
Nashville’s beauty trends have evolved alongside its vibrant, fast-paced lifestyle. With its growing popularity, cosmetic tattooing has become a preferred choice for locals who want to maintain a polished appearance without the hassle of daily makeup. Here are a few reasons why it’s trending in Music City:
Active Lifestyle: With Nashville’s busy social scene, from concerts to outdoor festivals, people are constantly on the go. Cosmetic tattoos help maintain a fresh, made-up look even after a day full of activities.
Humidity-Proof Beauty: Anyone who has lived through a Nashville summer knows the struggle of keeping makeup intact in high humidity. Cosmetic tattooing eliminates the worry of smudging or melting makeup in hot, sticky weather.
Low Maintenance: For those with hectic schedules, the time-saving benefits of cosmetic tattooing make it incredibly appealing. Imagine waking up with your brows already perfectly in place!
Choosing the Right Esthetician in Nashville
Selecting the right esthetician for your cosmetic tattoo procedure is crucial. Here are a few tips to ensure you find a skilled professional:
Check for Proper Licensing: In Tennessee, cosmetic tattoo artists must hold a license from the Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners. Make sure your esthetician is licensed and follows state regulations. Beyond this licensure, it is required that the tattooist is either licensed with the Health Department as a Tattoo Artist/Shop or is under the guidance of a medical director. I work from a private studio which is licensed as a Tattoo Shop and I am a licensed Tattoo Artist. As part of this certification, my studio and my practices within it are inspected every 3 months to certify high quality standards and sanitation.
Look at Portfolios: Before booking, review the artist’s previous work. Most estheticians will showcase before-and-after photos on their website or social media. This gives you an idea of their style and skill level. Be sure and ask to see some photos of healed work as it is a better representation of what to expect than a very fresh “After” photo. You can see more of my work on Instagram (@secret.beauty.artistry) or in the Gallery section of this site.
Read Reviews: Google reviews and social media recommendations from local clients can help you gauge the reputation of an esthetician. Focus on Nashville-based reviews to see how others in your area rate their experiences. Word of mouth is how I’ve acquired most of my cosmetic tattoo clients. It allows you to see the work on someone you know and hear firsthand about the experience. It’s the greatest honor to receive referrals from happy clients!
Schedule a Consultation: A consultation allows you to discuss your goals and expectations with your esthetician. During this time, you can ask questions about the process, aftercare, and any potential risks. Consultations can be done over the phone or in person and are free!
What to Expect During Your Cosmetic Tattoo Appointment
Cosmetic tattooing is generally a safe procedure when performed by a licensed professional, but there are still steps you should take to prepare for your appointment. Here’s what you can expect:
Consultation and Design: I will begin by discussing your desired look and mapping out the design on your skin. This is a collaborative process, ensuring you’re happy with the shape, color, and overall appearance before any pigment is applied. I want to hear honest feedback and will also offer my professional perspective on what will look best.
Numbing: To minimize discomfort, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area being tattooed. While some mild discomfort may still occur, most clients describe it as tolerable.
Tattoo Application: Once you feel pleased with the overall shape, I will create customized color(s) and we will begin. I work on one eyebrow for about 10-15 minutes, apply more numbing gel and then work on the other side before switching back again. This helps to keep the skin as numb as possible.
Aftercare Instructions: After your procedure, I will provide detailed aftercare instructions to promote healing and ensure the best results. Common aftercare steps include avoiding makeup, and sun exposure for the first few days. I also recommend avoiding sweating for at least the first 4 days but a full week is even better.
Cosmetic Tattoo Aftercare Tips
Proper aftercare is essential to achieving the best results from your cosmetic tattoo. Here are some general aftercare tips to follow:
Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the treated area with the provided cleanser and pat dry (2x per day for 7 days). You will also be provided with a soothing gel you will apply 3x per day for 5 days.
Avoid Sun Exposure: The sun can cause the pigment to fade prematurely, so it’s essential to keep the area protected during the healing process.
No Picking or Scratching: As your skin heals, it may scab slightly. Avoid picking at the area, as this can affect the final result.
Follow Up with Your Esthetician: Many cosmetic tattoo procedures require a follow-up appointment for touch-ups. I have found it is rare that a follow up appointment is needed however if there are areas that need improvement, this can be done a month after the initial appointment (at the earliest). This is often more necessary when there is less hair, previous scarring or aftercare is not properly adhered to.
Conclusion
Cosmetic tattooing is a fantastic solution for those seeking a low-maintenance beauty routine, but it’s not for everyone. Before booking your appointment, consider your skin type, lifestyle, and long-term beauty goals. I can answer any and all questions you may have!
